Taras Shevchenko. Portrait of Boris Sukhanov-Podkolzin. Pencil on paper (21.3 × 15.7 cm). [St.Petersburg]. [No sooner than 21.V] 1858.

There is author's date and signature in white pencil at bottom right: 1858 // Shevchenko.

About the implementation by Shevchenko portraits B. G. Sukhanov-Podkolzin and his younger brother Gabriel B. G. Sukhanov-Podkolzin mentioned in a letter to A. Konysky on October 5, 1898: "Before some holiday Taras painted our portraits in gift to our mother". In another letter of the same year B. G. Sukhanov-Podkolzin said to Konysky about sending to him photos of his mother and mentioned portrait by Shevchenko [Institute of Literature National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Department of Manuscripts, fund 77, p. 230, 247]. This portrait of B. G. Sukhanov-Podkolzin and was published by A. Konysky [see "Taras Shevchenko-Grushivsky", Lviv, 1898, vol. II, p. 235].

The date of portraits limited by last Shevchenko record in his diary (20 May 1858), in which, with all its detailed fixing Petersburg dating after his return from exile, there are no mentions of Sukhanov-Podkolzin that denies the possibility of getting acquainted with them before.

The fact that acquaintance was getting later, evidenced by comparing the circumstances of the artist's life, recorded in his diary and memoirs by B. G. Sukhanov-Podkolzin. Thus, from the diary known that Shevchenko to the time of last record lived in M. Lazarevsky, not having his own apartment and studio, while B. G. Sukhanov-Podkolzin reported in memoirs that friendships with his family Shevchenko already lived at the Academy of Fine Arts.
