There is author's date and signature at the right of portrait: 1858 // Shevchenko.
Portrait of A. K. Kadnytsky – manager governor's office in Nizhny Novgorod – executed instead conceived group portrait of Shevchenko friends (see note to number 19). Dated on the basis of recording in his diary on February 12, 1858: "Today, painted a portrait of Kadinsky. It remains to draw Frelich and quits" [Shevchenko false wrote names of Kadnytsky and Frelich (see "Taras Shevchenko in Nizhny Novgorod", Collected, 1939, p. 173, 178)].
In the literature erroneously dated November 1857 [A. Rodin, Shevchenko in the way from exile, "Dawn", 1896, № 9, p. 175].
In O.P. Novitsky's work ["Taras Shevchenko as a painter", Lviv – Moscow, 1914, p. 48, № 115, Tab. 22] this portrait was false reproduced as a portrait of Nizhny Novgorod Governor O. M. Muraviev, which at that time was 66 years – not age of portrayed person. In unpublished materials A. Novitsky reattributed this portrait as a portrait of A. K. Kadynsky.
