In the article "For biography Shevchenko (his staying in Novopetrovsk fort)» K. Oberuchev wrote:

"…Shevchenko often served guards near the flagpole (30 of 63). This agrees with the indication of Malinnikov that "Shevchenko loved this place". Flagpole stood on a separate high cliff in front of the fort. This offers a wide range of vision in all directions. One can see the sea and the fishing village on the shore of the bay" ["Kyiv antiquity", 1900, Vol. II, p. 160].
