In his diary on September 14, 1857 Shevchenko recorded:

"On the occasion of the adoption of a new cargo ship our stood until 11:00 am at the Kazan shore. Taking advantage of this rare opportunity and although overcast, but not wet weather, I went to the bank and made two abris: general view of Kazan and the view on the Volga against Kazan and village Uslon".
