Portrait drawed after photography made by Denier 1858, two copies of which are stored in the funds of the State Museum of Taras Shevchenko USSR Academy of Sciences (Kyiv) (inv. f – 71 and f – 75).
In the Chestahivsky's list (№ 46) indicate that this self-portrait of Shevchenko drawed after the Paris lithography.
K. F. Junge, who well knew Shevchenko, believed that it was the best and closest matching portrait of all the contemporary portraits of Shevchenko (A. Novitsky Taras Shevchenko as a painter, Lviv – Moscow, 1914, p. 80, № 629).
At National Public library (Moscow) kept a copy of the same etching with author's inscription: To Aleksandra Ivanovna Gulak-Artemovska tribute to 4 December 1860 year (I. Eisenstok, Fate of the Shevchenko's literary legacy, "Literary legacy", M., 1935, № 19 – 20, p. 483). This is a basis for clarifying the date of this portrait.
In the funds of the State Museum of Taras Shevchenko USSR (Kyiv) saved two etching print of the same original state (inv. number g – 219, g – 764) and third, similar to described here completed portrait print with autographs of Shevchenko's rhymes "Raise dwelling, garden" and "Should we not then cease, my friend" (inv. number g – 1537).
