On the cross, shown right, ink inscription hand Shevchenko: In Subotiv.

Subotiv – village in Chyhyryn county, Kiev province, where was Khmelnitsky's estate. Shevchenko first time came here in 1843, but do not know whether he had painted landscapes at that time.

Dated by the time of staying Shevchenko in Poltava and Kiev provinces.

In the literature mentioned under the name "Burial crosses in Subotiv. 1844" ["To Shevchenko's drawings", "Kievan Antiquity", vol. XXVIII, K., 1890, February, p. 358].
