Grotesque self-portraits, in which Shevchenko shown in a black velvet cap, allow these sketches dated by December 1845 – February 1846, according to testimony of O. Chuzhbynsky about meeting with Shevchenko and his appearance postponed after the end of 1845 a serious illness [see. A. Chuzhbynsky, Memoirs at Shevchenko, St. Petersburg., 1861, p. 17].
