Pencil on paper (12.7 × 9.9 cm).

On the cap band designation: 3. R. – the third company of the 5 th Line Battalion, comprising Shevchenko served as ordinary in Orsk Fortress.

Self-portrait was the album that belonged to A.I. Lyzogub (ark. number 19). On a sheet below portrait placed inscription with ink by hand of A.I.Lyzogub: T. Shevchenko. Above right is marked with ink: 19.

Dated by the time of arrival of Shevchenko to Orsk and after the letter by A. Lyzogub on 07 Jan 1848 where he wrote about this self-portrait:

"Your letter, beloved friend, I get at New Year. Great gratitude for you for the letter and for you; but it is hard to see you" ("Kievan antiquity, 1900, bk. IX, p. 316).

Found in the literature under the names: "Self-portrait in the form of soldier" ("Visual Arts", K., 1939, № 2 – 3, 3 pages. Cover – Art Calendar); "Shevchenko – a soldier" (M. Kalaushyn, Taras Shevchenko in portraits and illustrations, L., 1940, p. 110); "Taras Shevchenko in soldier uniform" ("About the great poet Taras Shevchenko in 50th anniversary of his death", Lviv, 1911, page 17).
