Portrait of an elderly woman with a boy

Taras Shevchenko. Portrait of an…

Taras Shevchenko. Portrait of an elderly woman with a boy. Pencil on paper (25 × 22 cm). [1845-1846].

In a Chestahivsky's list (№ 64), this portrait is registered under the name "Oldish woman with a small boy" and noted that portret drawed before Shevchenko's exile.

A. Novitsky in the book "Taras Shevchenko as a painter" [Lviv – Moscow, 1914, p. 43, № 55] calls it the "Fat granny with boy"; reproduced on table 24 with caption: "Woman with a boy". In unpublished work "Paintings of Taras Shevchenko" [K., 1936, p. 76] A. Novitsky mistakenly assumes that this is a portrait of Maria Fedorovna Katerynych (for comparison see her portrait). Manner of execution is close to the portraits, which Shevchenko made during the second visit to Ukraine.

In 1929 exposed in an exhibition of works of T. Shevchenko in Chernihiv (Catalogue, p. 19, № 30).

Original works of Shevchenko is not found. Reproduced after the book A. Novitsky "Shevchenko as a painter" [Lviv – Moscow, 1914, p. 24].
