According to the former owner of the portrait G. Schleifer – this is a portrait of Gorlenko.

Lack of author's signature and restoration marks made in a manner slightly different from the Shevchenko handwriting, cause some researchers to denial the authorship of Shevchenko.

Storage areas: a collection of G. Schleifer in Kyiv, Ukrainian Historical Museum, Kyiv, Kharkiv State Museum of Fine Arts, Gallery of paintings by Taras Shevchenko, Kharkiv.

In 1911 exposed in an exhibition of works of art Shevchenko in Kyiv (catalog, № 41); in 1954 – the exhibition Art of the Ukrainian SSR, devoted to 300th anniversary of reunification of Ukraine with Russia (Catalogue, p. 17).
