In the portrait depicts Barbara and Nicholas Repnin – children of Basil N. Repnin – Barbara Repnina's brother.
In a letter to Charles Einar on January 27, 1844 Barbara Repnina wrote: "…he [Shevchenko] worked in the Glafira's studio on portraits of children of my brother and I took them to sit quietly" [«Russian propylaes», vol. II, M., 1916, p. 217]. The portrait was completed not later than 10 January – time when Shevchenko leaved Yagotyn.
