On the back of the picture, below, ink inscription: Shevchenko portrait done by himself in mirror in 1845 in the village Potoky (Kyiv province) and given to N.V. Tarnovskaya.
Potoky was the village in Kaniv county, Kyiv province (now – Potok, Myronivka district, Kiev region), where Shevchenko visited Tarnowskі (see Kievan antiquity, K., 1897, February, Docs., P. 31 – 32). Here it is August 28 with N.V. Tarnowska baptized a child of local deacon.
At the same time Shevchenko draw "Pantry in Potoky".
M. Kalaushyn ("Shevchenko in portraits and illustrations, p. 52) wrong dated this self-portrait as 1843.
